Welcome to QA's Lab Guide for our Hands-on Lab Start Your First Azure Virtual Machine (Windows)!
Note: QA is aware that Internet Explorer is no longer supported at that the instance you connect to still has it installed. This VM is only intended to practice connecting, and IE should not interfere with your training. Please ignore any warning you may see about IE as we work on updating the VM image)
As one of the first labs a new student might be taking, it's important to remember that it's ok not to get it correct the first time. For security, our Hands-on Labs have restrictions placed on your lab account. Sometimes, this can cause some confusion for new students.
Due to this, one of the common accidents students have is not being unable to connect to the Remote Desktop using an RDP connection. This procedure is something a system administrator or cloud architect will perform many times but can still be challenging when you're getting started.
Bellow, you can find some extra steps to help you connect to the instance through RDP.
How to Connect
1) Be sure the lab environment has fully loaded. In this particular lab, provisioning generally takes less than 1 minute:
2) Open the Azure console using the provided credentials for the lab session:
3) For the 2nd step: Configuring and Launching a Windows VM, continue by following the instructions closely. As you can see below, you should be able to create the VM by matching the instructions configuration:
3) For the 4th step: Connecting to the Virtual Machine (RDP), you'll be instructed to connect to the RDP.
Since the most common error occurs at this point, please double-check the inbound and outbound ports for your VM. This is noted on task 9 during the lab:
9. Click Next: Networking > and ensure the following options are configured for your VM:
Public inbound ports: Allow selected ports
Public inbound ports: RDP (3389)
This should prevent a connection error and let you download the RDP file.
Connection Errors/Timeout
Alternatively, if you see the same error and are sure that you have set up the VM correctly, your network might be blocking RDP traffic. This is very common on enterprise networks. If you're working from behind a corporate firewall, please attempt the lab using a different network or turning off any VPN connections you might be using. You can even hotspot to a mobile phone and immediately retry the connection. If your network was the cause, your connection should work.
