This article discusses what happens when you update your custom content in Content Engine. Content Engine is available in enterprise accounts. Anyone in your enterprise can create content in Content Engine, but only administrators can publish the content.

Updating Content in courses

You create a custom course from courses, resources, hands-on labs, and exams that you choose for learners to complete in order. You can upload the content of the course to your account or choose items from the training library.

You can update a custom course, even after you published it and even if users are currently working on it. Users who completed 100% of the course before the updates have the chance to re-take the course.

Tip: If you restart a course you previously completed, you see the progress on that course change from 100% to reflect your current progress. However, the reports still show that you completed the course previously.

You can update a course in two ways:

• You can add, remove, or reorder the steps in the path, which changes the structure of the course but not the content.
• You can change the content of the items in the course.

The rest of this section describes what happens when you change the structure of the course. Later sections in this article describe what happens when you change the content.

When you change the structure of the course and click Publish, a window like the following appears:

If you select the Notify active users? check box, the system sends an email to the users who are currently completing the course, as well as those who previously completed it. The note you enter in the What's new? field appears in the alert email and on the Updates section of the course page.

Regardless of whether you have the system send the email, the users who are currently completing the course see an alert like the following the next time they log in to their account:

Users must click Unlock my progress to continue the course. When they open the course, they access the new version of the content. Their progress through the course reflects the new content.

Updating SCORM and non-SCORM Resources

Resources are files you upload, including videos, written documents, and SCORM packages. If you delete a resource or upload a new version of the resource and publish it, Content Engine does not offer you an option to alert users systematically. However, if the resource you delete or republish is part of a course, then users currently working on that course see the Updated Content window shown previously the next time they log in to their account.

The system continues to give credit to users who completed the this resource in the course, even if you update the resource.  

For users who left the course while using the particular resource that you deleted or updated, the following version of the Updated Content window appears when they return to that resource, whether they access it within or outside of the course. This alert appears in addition to the first alert.

Updating Hands-on Labs

A custom hands-on lab is a hands-on lab that you create to train your own company's employees on the specifics of your technology stack. Like custom courses, you can update custom hands-on labs by changing the structure of the lab (adding, deleting, or rearranging steps) or by changing the content of the steps.

When you update the structure of a lab and publish it, Content Engine does not offer you an option to alert users systematically. However, if the hands-on lab is part of a course, then the users completing that course see the Updated Content window the next time they log in to their account.

Note: Reordering steps in the hands-on lab is an exception to this rule. If you only reorder the steps and make no other changes, then the Updated Content window does not appear.

For users who left the course while using the particular lab that you deleted or updated, another Updated Content window appears when they return to that resource, whether they access it within or outside of the course. This alert appears in addition to the first alert.
