This article discusses job roles in QA. Job roles are Skills Readiness Solution features and are available in enterprise accounts. Administrators and team managers can create job roles. Enterprise team members can be assigned a job role.
Tip: Job roles have a similar name to another feature: job role paths. See the How Job Roles are Different from Job Role Paths for more information.
This document contains the following sections:

What Are Job Roles
A job role is like a job title. Once the members in your organization have a job role, you can assign training based on job role.
For example, you might have members with a job role like Junior Front-End Engineer across different teams. You can use a program to assign training to all Junior Front-End Engineers without having to create separate assignments for each team or member.
You can find a list of your job roles on the Job roles screen.
On this screen, you see the following elements:
- If you have unstructured job roles, you see a banner at the top. See the procedure later in this article for steps on adding those job roles to a career path.
- A button to bulk import job roles. See the procedure later in this article for steps to bulk import job roles.
- A search field where you can search the title of the job roles in your account.
- A list of job roles, including the name, which programs it's a part of, the members assigned this job role, and the number of training programs assigned to member with this job role. Click a job role title to open a detail view with a list of the members' and programs' names. Click the menu with the three dots on the right side of the row to perform the following actions. You can also perform these actions from the detail view:
- Assign this job role to one or more team members
- Deploy a program to all team members with this job role
- Rename this job role
- Delete this job role
To get the most benefit from job roles, you set them up as the stages of a career path. In the career path, you indicate the level of proficiency that members with each job role need in essential skills. Configuring this information enables you to automate training with programs programs.
Within each job role, you can assign:
- Skills-based training programs: This type of program assigns training about the smart skills to each team member with this job role, at the difficulty level appropriate to each team member.
- Content-based training programs: This type of program assigns the content you choose to each team member with the job role. The level of difficulty is the same for all team members.
In either case, as long as the program is running, the platform also assigns the training to any new team members who are assigned the job role. See the Programs article for more information.
When you use QA's career paths, you see a matrix of:
- The job roles in the order you expect a person to progress through them.
- The smart skills that are essential for team members on this career path.
Note: Technically you can add skills other than smart skills to a career path, but we recommend you use smart skills to get the benefit of automated tools to let learner skip training over subjects they already know. Learn more in the Smart Skills article.
How to Assign a Team Member a Job Role
You can assign a job role to a team member in multiple places:
- Add team members to the job role on the Career Path screen
- Add a Job Role value to the team member on the Organization screen
- Include the team members and their job roles in a bulk import, as described later in this article
After you have assigned the job role to a member, you can see it in multiple places across the platform where you see members listed, such as:
Use the following steps to add members to a job role on the Career Path screen:
- From the dashboard, click the building icon in the top toolbar, then click the Careers tab in the left-side navigation and choose Job Roles from the menu that appears.
The Job Roles screen appears with a list of the job roles in your account. - Scroll to the job role you want to assign and click menu with the three dots on the right side of the row. Choose Assign job role to users from the menu that appears.
The Assign job role to users window appears. - Click the Select link next to each team member to whom you want to assign this job role.
Tip: You can use the search box at the top of the window to find the team members you want. - Click the Assign job role to # users button.
The platform assigns the job role to the assigned users and closes the window.
How to Bulk Import Job Roles
You can import a CSV to create many job roles at once. The platform requires very specific formatting for the CSV. You can use the provided CSV template to make sure your format is correct. The template contains two columns: email and job_title.
The email column is optional and the job_title column is required. If the job_title value does not exactly match the name of a job role already in your account, the platform uses the name to create a new job role.
If you include email values, the platform assigns the job role to the member with that email. If the job_title value matches an existing job role in your account exactly, the platform assigns the member that job role. If the job_title does not exactly match, the platform creates a new job role with that name and assigns it to the member.
The member email address in the CSV must exactly match the email address of one of your members for the platform to assign the job role. If the email address does not match exactly, the platform ignores that row in the CSV.
Use the following steps to import a CSV of job roles into your account.
- From the dashboard, click the building icon in the top toolbar, then click the Careers tab in the left-side navigation and choose Job Roles from the menu that appears.
-
The Job Roles screen appears with a list of the job roles in your account. - Click the Import job roles button.
The Import Job Roles window appears.
Tip: This window contains a link to a CSV template. Use this template to ensure the platform can process your file correctly. - Click the Click or drag and drop your CSV here section to open a window to navigate your computer and find your CSV file. Alternately, you can drag the CSV from its location on your computer to this window.
- Click Import to start importing the file.
How to Add an Unstructured Job Role to a Career Path
If you import a CSV of job roles or create job roles by assigning them to members on the Organization screen, the job role is not a part of a career path. The platform calls these unstructured job roles.
When you have unstructured job roles, a message like the following appears at the top of the Job Roles screen (as you can see earlier in this article) as well as the Career Path screen.
You can add the unstructured job roles to a career path. Click View unstructured job roles from the alert.
When you select a check box next to a job role, a Create a career path button appears. If you want to include multiple job roles in the same career path, select the checkbox next to them before clicking Create a career path.
