About translations
QA's translations let your learners study and assess in the language that works best for them, across exams, smart assessments, articles, and video subtitles.
How translations work
Translations are a combination of languages and content types. Each translatable item can be offered in one or more languages, and not every language is available for every content type. If you need a specific language that isn't currently offered, your customer success manager can scope and price it for you.
Note: The QA platform interface stays in English. Only the content itself, questions, answers, article text, and subtitles are translated. A learner can take a translated exam while the exam landing page and platform navigation remain in English.
What gets translated
These content types support translations:
- Exam questions and answers
- Smart Assessment questions and answers
- Article body text
- Video subtitles
What isn't translated
The following stays in English, even when translations are enabled on your account:
- Labs and the lab code environment
- Resources
- Landing pages for courses, labs, and lessons
- Introductions, About sections, Title, and other static descriptions
Note: Translated content sits inside an English platform shell. Learners switch the language from inside each individual exam, assessment, article, or video. There's no global "switch the platform to another language" option.

QA currently supports translations in the following languages:

Note: Not every language is available for every content type. To check which languages apply to your specific exams, assessments, articles, or videos, contact your customer success manager.
Need a language that isn't listed? Reach out to your customer success manager. Custom languages can be added to your plan as a separate request, with their own scope and pricing.
Is this included in my plan?
Translations are an add-on. They aren't part of the standard QA license.
If you don't see translation options in your account, your current plan probably doesn't include them. To enable translations, talk to your admin or your customer success manager — they can review the options and update your plan.
Why don't I see translations on my account?
Translations are available on QA as an add-on. If you can't find translation options on your exams, smart assessments, articles, or videos, here's why and what to do about it.
Possible causes
- Translations aren't included in your current plan. Translations are an add-on and aren't part of the standard QA license. If your plan doesn't cover them, the language selector won't appear anywhere on the platform.
- The language you need isn't offered for that content type. Even when translations are enabled, not every language is available for every content type. You may see some languages on an exam but a different set on an article.
How to fix it
- Check with your admin. Confirm whether translations are part of your organization's current plan. Your admin can tell you what's already enabled.
- Contact your customer success manager. If translations aren't on your plan, your customer success manager can review the options and add them. They'll walk you through the supported languages and content types before anything is updated.
- Request a specific language if it's missing. If translations are enabled but the language you need isn't available for the content type you're working with, your customer success manager can scope a custom language as a separate request, with its own pricing.
Note: Translations are priced as an add-on. Your customer success manager will share the options and pricing before any change is made to your plan.

Taking a Smart Assessment in your language
QA Smart Assessments can be taken in any language available for that assessment. Switch the language before you start, and the questions and answers appear translated throughout the session and in your results.
1. Open the Smart Assessment landing page
Go to the Smart Assessment you want to take. Next to the Start assessment button, you'll see a Language button showing the current language — for example, Language: English.
2. Choose your language
Click the Language button to open the Language Selection modal. The modal lists every language this Smart Assessment is available in.
Pick the language you want, then click Select Language to confirm.
Note: The languages shown depend on the translations enabled for that specific Smart Assessment. The list may differ from one assessment to another.
3. Take the assessment
Click Start assessment. The questions and answer options appear in the language you selected.
Note: The platform interface — buttons, navigation, the timer, headings — stays in English. Only the question content and the answer options are translated. Language selection applies to the assessment content, not to the wider
platform.
You can't change the language during the smart assessment. If you want to take the exam in a different language, exit your current session and start again.
4. Review your results
When you finish, you're returned to the Smart Skill page. The layout here is still in English, but you can open your assessment results to see translated questions and answers with right and wrong markers.
Click View assessment results to open the Smart Assessment Results page. Every question and answer option is shown in the language you used, with correct and incorrect choices clearly marked.
Want to retake the assessment in a different language? Open the Language button on the landing page and pick a new one before you start your next attempt.
Taking an exam in your language
QA exams can be taken in any language available for that exam. Switch the language before you start, and the questions, answers, and explanations stay translated through the exam session and the results.
1. Open the exam landing page
Go to the exam you want to take. Next to the Start button, you'll see two things:
- A label showing the exam's current language — for example, English.
- A Multi-language indicator, telling you the exam is available in more than one language.
Note: Exams can default to a language other than English. Don't assume the language shown on the button is your only option — open the language modal to see what's available.
2. Choose your language
Click the language label to open the language selection modal. The modal tells you which language the exam defaults to and lists every language it supports.
Pick the language you want, then click Select Language.
Note: The language list is specific to each exam. Translations available depend on what's been enabled for that particular exam, so the list can differ from one exam to another.
3. Take the exam
Click Start. The questions and answer options appear in the language you selected. The platform shell — navigation, the questions index, the timer, and buttons like Answer or Review later — stays in English.
Note: You can't change the language during the exam. If you want to take the exam in a different language, exit your current session and start again.
4. Review your results
When you finish, the Exam Result page opens. The page layout — your score, time spent, and the correct/incorrect breakdown — stays in English. Everything that's part of the exam content stays in your selected language: each question, the answer options, and the explanation for the correct answer.
Use the Review answers tab to step through every question and see what you got right and wrong.
Note: Want to retake the exam in a different language? Click Retake now, then open the language modal again and pick a new language before you start your next attempt.
Watching videos with subtitles in your language
QA videos can be played with subtitles in any of the languages available for that video. The audio stays in English — only the subtitle text is translated.
1. Open the video and start playback
Go to the video you want to watch and click the play button to start it.
2. Open the subtitle menu
In the video player controls, click the subtitles icon (near the bottom-right of the player). A small menu opens listing the subtitle languages available for that video.
Note: The languages shown depend on what's been enabled for each video. The list can differ from one video to another.
3. Pick your subtitle language
Choose the language you want to read along with. Subtitles appear over the video as it plays.
To turn them off again, open the same menu and choose subtitles off.
What stays in English
Subtitles translate only the spoken text of the video. The rest of the experience stays in English:
- The audio — the presenter still speaks English
- The slides used in the video
- The platform interface around the video player
- Lesson introductions, About sections, and other static content
Note: Need a written copy of the spoken content in your language? Look for the video's transcript. When translations are enabled on your account, transcripts are available in the supported languages too.
Reading articles in your language
QA articles can be translated into any supported language on demand, using AI. Switch the language from inside the article and the body content updates instantly.
1. Open the article
Go to the article you want to read. Just below the article title, you'll see a Language button showing the current language — for example, Language: English.
2. Choose your language
Click the Language button to open the modal titled Read this content in your language. Themodal explains that the article is currently in English and lists every language it can be translated into.
Pick the language you want, then click Select Language.
Note: Articles use AI-generated translations, so every supported language is available straight away — you don't need to wait for the content to be manually translated or requested by your administration.
3. Read the translated article
After a few seconds, the article body appears in the language you chose. The Language button also updates to show your new selection.
To switch to a different language or back to the original, click the Language button again and pick a new option.
A few things to know
- Translations are AI-generated. They're produced automatically rather than written by a human translator, so phrasing or technical terms can occasionally be slightly off. The badgenear the title is a reminder that the text is an AI translation.

Only the article body is translated. Course titles, navigation, side menus, the Mark as completed
button, and other interface labels around the article stay in English. - Static content stays in English. Course descriptions, About sections, and lesson introductions aren't translated, even when the article body is.
Note: Article translations are available only when your organization has enabled the feature. If you don't see a
Language button on your articles, ask your admin whether translations are part of your plan.
Translating your custom content
If your organization creates custom exams, Smart Assessments, articles, or videos through QA's Content Engine, you can publish translated versions of that content for your learners.
How translations work for custom content
How a translation is produced depends on the content type:
- Exams and Smart Assessments - You download a CSV template from the content engine, fill in question and answer translations for the languages you want, and import the file back. You can enable or disable each language separately.
- Articles - Translations are AI-generated automatically the first time a learner requests one. You can review the AI output and edit it, and your edited version replaces the AI translation for everyone going forward.
- Videos - You upload a VTT subtitle file per language, directly from the lesson creation flow.
Note: The content engine has a dedicated Translations section that lists every exam, Smart Assessment, and article translation in one place. That's where you import CSV files, enable or disable languages, and edit AI-generated article translations.
What you need before you start
A few prerequisites need to be in place before you can publish translated custom content:
- Translations enabled on your plan. Translations are an add-on to the standard QA license. If translations aren't part of your plan, the language options and the Translations section won't appear in the content engine.
- AI processing consent (articles only). AI-translated articles work by processing your custom content through an AI model. Your organization must grant AI processing consent before article translations can be generated for learners. Contact your account manager to enable it.
- You own the questions you're translating. For exams that mix QA-curated and custom-curated questions, you can only create or amend translations for the questions your organization owns. QA-curated questions are translated centrally.

Translating custom exams and Smart Assessments
Translate the questions and answers in your custom exams or Smart Assessments by downloading a translation file, filling in your translations, and importing the file back into the content engine.
1. Download the translation file
Open the Content Engine. The starting point depends on the content type — but the rest of the flow is the same.
From a custom exam
Open the Exams section. Find the exam you want to translate, then open its Actions menu and click Download translations file.
From a custom Smart Assessment
Open the skill that contains the Smart Assessment. On the Smart Assessment tab, click Download translations file.
The file saves to your default download location.
2. Add your translations
Open the file. Each supported language has its own tab. In every tab, you'll find:
- A column with the original questions and answers in English
- An empty column where you add your translations
Fill in the translations in the tabs for the languages you want to publish. You don't need to fill every tab — only the ones you plan to publish.
Note: The file only includes the questions your organization owns. If your exam mixes QA-curated and custom-curated questions, you can translate only the questions you own. QA-curated questions are translated centrally.
Inside a language tab, fill in every translation cell for the questions and answers you want to publish. The import will fail for a language with missing translations.
3. Import the file in the Translations tab
In the content engine, open Translations. Switch to the Exams or Assessments tab depending on what you're translating, and click Import.
In the Import panel, click Select file to upload your file from your computer (or drag and drop itinto the upload area). Only .xls and .xlsx formats are supported.
If the upload is successful and the file has no errors, you'll land on the translation detail page for that exam or Smart Assessment.
Note: Common import errors include missing translations for some questions or answers. The import won't process a language with incomplete fields — fix the file and re-upload.
4. Enable the language
On the translation detail page, you'll see a list of languages with their current status - Enabled or Disabled. The page also confirms which language was just imported and whether all its translations are complete.
For each language you want to publish, click Enable translation. The exam or SmartAssessment is now live in that language for your learners.
Note: You can disable a language at any time — for example, while you're reworking the exam or fixing an error in a translation. Click Disable translation on the same page. Disabled languages stop appearing for learners straightaway.
Managing AI article translations
QA generates AI translations for your custom articles automatically — every time a learner asks to read one in another language. From the Translations section in the content engine, you can review every AI translation, edit it, and correct anything that didn't come through quite right.
1. View your AI article translations
In the content engine, open Translations and switch to the Articles tab.
The page lists every article that has at least one AI translation, showing the languages it's been translated into, the date it was first generated, and a status indicator (Activated or Disabled).
Note: An article only appears in this list once a learner has requested at least one translation of it. Until then, no AI translation has been generated, and there's nothing to review.
2. Open a translation
Click an article in the list to open its translation detail page. You'll see:
- The original English content on the left
- The translated version of the content on the right
- A row of language tags showing every language that's been generated for this article, with each one's status
3. Edit a translation
To change the translation for a specific language:
- Click the language tag at the top to switch to that language.
- Click Edit translation.
- Make your changes in the editor and click Save changes.
Your edits replace the AI-generated version. From this point on, any learner who reads this article in this language sees your edited text instead of the original AI output.
Note: Edited translations stay pinned to your version. They aren't regenerated by the AI — unless the original English article changes (see step 4).
4. Keep translations in sync with the original article
If you change the original English article, every translation for that article is regenerated by AI to stay in sync with the latest version. This includes any translations you'd previously edited.
If you want to keep custom edits in a translation after updating the source article, reapply them after the new translation is generated.
Note: Regeneration keeps every language up to date with the source content. Learners always see translated text that matches the current English article.
Adding subtitles to your custom videos
Make your custom videos accessible in multiple languages by uploading a VTT subtitle file per language. Subtitles let learners read along in their preferred language while the audio stays in English.
1. Open the video learning unit
In the Content Engine, open the lesson that contains the video, then open the video learning unit.
The learning unit editor opens with all the video information on the right side of the page.
2. Find the Subtitles section
Scroll the right-hand panel until you see the Subtitles section. It sits alongside the other video information for the learning unit.
3. Add a subtitle file per language
For each language you want to support:
- Click + Add subtitles file at the bottom of the section.
- Pick the Language from the dropdown.
- Upload the VTT file from your computer.
Note: Subtitle files must be in .vtt format. You'll need one VTT file per language — for example, separate files for English, French, German, Portuguese, and so on.
To replace an existing subtitle file with a new version, click the × next to the entry to remove it, then upload the new file.
4. Save the lesson
Once you've added every language you need, save your changes to the lesson.
The subtitle options appear inside the QA video player for learners as soon as the lesson is published. The audio in the video still plays in English — only the subtitle text reflects the learner's chosen language.
