Hi! Welcome to our Lab Guide for the AWS lab Managing Instance Volumes Using EBS.
During this lab, you are being taught how to create an EC2 instance with an additional EBS volume. You are to learn to attach and detach an EBS to/from a specific EC2 instance, take a snapshot, and master to delete a volume.
For this lab, you will need to pay close attention to the instance configuration to ensure the instance will launch. Make sure everything is selected as described, but also do not forget to uncheck any values that are checked or on by default. Not doing so can cause the validation check to fail.
Here are some condensed instructions to pass the lab checks:
- Ensure that the environment has loaded 100% before starting. If you enter before this, the lab may not function correctly as your profile, permissions, and services/resources may not have completed their setup.
- Log into AWS using the provided credentials for the lab session and note how much time you will have.
- Type "EC2" into the search bar and enter the service. Then, choose "Instances", and then click "Launch Instances"
- When creating the instance make sure it follows the requirements strictly or it will not pass:
- The "Choose an Amazon Machine Image (AMI)" page displays a list of basic configurations called Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) that serve as templates for your instance. Select the 64-bit Amazon Linux 2 AMI.
- On "Instance Type", leave everything as the default
- On "keypair log-in" choose the one that has a number
- On "Configure Storage", you can add additional storage volumes to the launching instance. Click on "Add New Volume" and set the Size to 16GB and the "Volume Type" to General Purpose SSD (gp2) with "Delete on Termination" unchecked
- Click "Launch Instance"
- It should launch successfully and pass the check.
Note that our policies are very strict and any small change can compromise the lab. Make sure you selected the correct region and that all settings, values, and names are exactly as described in the instructions. Also, take a look at our Help Center article Troubleshooting Problems With Labs.
